Fall Colors on Display – Touring America’s Scenic Byways

Fall is the time of year that many of us relish. The hot summer temperatures have finally subsided, there is a cool, crisp feeling in the air, and the leaves are beginning to change color. Now is the time to venture out and take in this spectacular masterpiece of vibrant reds, oranges, yellows and other extravagant colors that are on display. There are many scenic byways across America that allow you to see some of the most magnificent fall foliage. Here are a few to consider that should provide some great fall scenery.

Kancamagus Scenic Byway - Located in Northern New Hampshire, this scenic byway traverses the scenic White Mountains, and is well known for its beautiful fall foliage. This route is 26.5 miles long and weaves through the White Mountain National Forest with incredible scenery around every turn. There is much history and recreation along the way, so be sure and take the time to check out some of these interesting sites as your journey unfolds. Interesting bridges, rivers, water falls, hiking trails, scenic overlooks, and brilliant colors will greet you all along this spectacular scenic byway.

Nebo Loop Scenic Byway - This is a 37 mile loop that starts in Payson, Utah and climbs into the mountains and deep into the forest. There are many areas to camp and hike in this area, but when driving through this area you will be treated to some of the most spectacular scenery in the nation. Fall color on Mount Nebo is set off against the many red and white rock formations in this area, making for some remarkable Autumn scenery.

Talimena Scenic Byway - This is a 54 mile route that travels through the Ouachita National Forest from Talihina, Oklahoma to Mena, Arkansas. The drive meanders along the top of the Ouachita, Winding Stair, and Rich Mountains, and provides spectacular views. There are many scenic overlooks along the way that provide great photo opportunities. This area provides vibrant colors in the fall, and is a favorite route for many.

Midland Trail Scenic Byway - Located in West Virginia, this is a 117 mile drive that starts out at the state's capitol and travels through Malden. The byway continues through white-water mountain country and onto the breathtaking scenery that awaits at New River Gorge and Hawks Nest State Park. In the fall the thick forest offers a broad range of fiery reds, oranges and yellows that you won't want to miss.

There are dozens of scenic byways across America that provide you with access to some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. For many of these areas, fall colors make for particularly stunning scenery, but these are great areas to explore throughout the year.
